Mikako Hayashi
Professor and Director, Osaka University Graduate School of Dentistry , Japan
Mikako Hayashi graduated from Osaka University Faculty of Dentistry in 1987, and was awarded a PhD by Osaka University in 1997. In 2001, she did post-doc research into the longevity of tooth-colored restorations at the University of Manchester Dental Hospital supervised by Professor Nairn Wilson. While in the UK, she joined the Cochrane Oral Health Group, and had opportunity to learn EBM.
In 2012, she was appointed Professor and Head of Department of Restorative Dentistry and Endodontology at Osaka University Graduate School of Dentistry. In 2020, she simultaneously became director of Osaka University Dental Hospital, with responsibility for organizing and running all the clinics and inpatient hospital care, for which she devised successful health and safety protocols to manage care in the Covid era.
In 2018, she established the Japan Chapter of the Alliance for a Cavity-Free Future, an international charity active in 30 countries that seeks to vanquish caries worldwide. As president of the Japan Chapter, she is actively developing an education program to change dentists’ mindset and behavior away from "drill and fill" and towards patient-centered biological carious management.
From April 2023, she became president of the Japanese Society of Conservative Dentistry (JSCD): her ambition is to disseminate the importance of preserving tooth structures to achieve better oral health, one of the best harbingers for a long and healthy life. As a part of the academic activity of JSCD, she has been author of several clinical practice guidelines for caries management based on the MI policy. Hayashi's current research themes include investigating the mechanical properties of dentin; understanding how caries develops as a way of combatting it; and studying pulp biology to develop vital pulp therapies. She has published many original research articles and edited textbooks and frequently gives lectures and seminars domestically and internationally. -
