Yasushi Shimada
Tokyo Medical and Dental University, Japan
Professor Yasushi Shimada was educated at Tokyo Medical and Dental University and achieving his DDS in 1987 and PhD in 1992. He was a guest scientist at National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) from 1997 to 1999 and at American Dental Association Health Foundation (ADAHF) in 2007. His extended research activities have involved characterization of dental adhesives introducing new methodologies such as the wire-loop micro-shear bond strength test.
Recently, he played a major role of development of dental OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) system at TMDU in collaboration with dental equipment manufacturer. OCT uses light for taking image, and OCT does not require any X ray radiation dose. So, there is no risk of radiation exposure in OCT, totally safe to use for small children and even for pregnancy women. OCT is capable of imaging dental caries and other dental diseases with high imaging resolution. Enamel demineralization is imaged as white zone in gray scale OCT image with increased brightness. Tooth crack and interfacial gap of adhesive restorations are imaged as bright lines in OCT with high accuracy. Consequently, cavity adaptation of composite restoration can be clearly monitored in OCT.
He was appointed to the Professor and Chair of Department of Cariology and Operative Dentistry of TMDU in 2021. He has supervised over 50 graduate students and postdoctoral researchers from Japan and around the world. -
